Some of the conspicuous relics that one can identifying as belonging to the Cold War period to the present day Germany include the Berlin Wall. Although it is now less significant as this is not something to be ignored from the history of the city and the world. Information, photos and films about the kilometers of the Berlin Wall which is discussed in the background of this well-known barrier will be placed on this page about it.

Berlin Wall Construction: The German Democratic Republic, popularly known as East Germany, began the construction of the Berlin Wall in August 13th, 1961. Under the Soviet rule, it was erected to separate East Berlin from West Berlin that fell under the control of the Western Allies. Some of the features of the wall were concreted, barb wired, and surmounted by towers.

At one time, the Berlin Wall stretched to 96.2 kilometers to enclose or ‘protect’ West Berlin. More specifically, it often refers to an outer wall and an inner wall arranged in a way where both were parallel to each other. Often referred to as the death strip, the area was under the control of the military, and having a non-specific purpose for it as a no man’s land made it a place that prohibited any sort of unauthorized crossing.

The Berlin Wall, thus, was increased and added to several times as the East and West Germany standoff developed over several years.

These deeds were formulation to prevent any form of attempt to flee from East Berlin. Thus, the East German authorities intended to build an ‘iron curtain’ by raising hurdles and strengthening surveillance.

The Berlin Wall grew up to its peak of 103 kilometers in 1989 before changing with time. In addition, this growth provided more informal barriers to defecting East Berliners too. Given that those attempting to cross the barrier were to be shot, guards stayed armed and watchtowers with spotlight were placed purposefully.

Berlin Wall fall and its afterglow

After several acts of non-violent protests and growing call for reform, the Berlin Wall collapsed on November 9, 1989. People made their way through Checkpoint divides, east and west Germans together brought sledgehammers and freed themselves by knocking down parts of the infamous wall.

Still, even bits of the Berlin Wall serve as reminders of the city’s stormy past today. Stretching to 1.3 kilometers in length, East Side Gallery is an outdoorsional one painted by artists out from different parts of the globe. This intense sculpture demonstrates how persistently the human soul might be joined despite the division.

All around

The construction of this barrier begun and covered a distance of about 96 miles and reached about 103 miles in its length. As barriers to attempt East Berlin escape came up, the wall length increased. In this sense, as representing the end result of the clash between East and West as the Cold Warcame to its end, as well as the reunification of Germany, its ultimate collapse can be seen as a turning point in history.
